Winter Gardening

Christmas and New Years are over, and in this part of the country we are looking at 2 or 3 more months of winter. For gardeners it is time to enjoy other hobbies and to start planning for the spring. I usually like to review which plants grew well here and which ones did not. The list seems to vary from year to year and from garden to garden because there are so many variables involved. Amount of sunlight, rain, and temperatures vary widely from one year to the next. I always have a base group of plants that I can count on to grow well under most conditions here. That is usually about half of the varieties I put in the garden and I try new varieties or plants that I haven’t grown in a few years in the rest of the garden.

Indoor gardening is also a part of gardening in the winter here. I don’t do a lot of it, but I always grow some herbs in a south facing window and some heirloom cherry tomatoes. If you have a greenhouse or sunroom you could have a lot more plants growing in your home until spring comes. It’s also a good time to catch up on reading and to get outdoors and enjoy the winter weather. Hopefully you will consider buying heirloom seeds from us in the coming season. I wish a happy and blessed New Year to everyone.
